With help from League of Women in Government, Wedell sheds a light on gender parity
Angelica Wedell, began her career as a television news journalist. She is now producing what she classifies as mini-documentaries for the League of Women in Government. She recently submitted her mini-doc Steps Toward Gender Balance to Audience Awards Female Filmmakers contest. Falling right in line with our initiative toward gender parity in the film industry, Angelica sheds a light on the imbalance in leadership positions in local government.
The short starts out with a statistic: Women in top local government leadership positions was 13 percent in the 1980s… and in 2015. It’s as chilling as the statistics we know about the film industry, that women make up only 19 percent of top-tier positions. Similarly, this is a subject that has been studied for decades and yet nothing has changed.
Shooting and producing basically on her own, Wedell put together a conversation on the subject by interviewing five women at the League of Women in Government Symposium. These women are government leaders, professors, researchers and they all had the same thing to say: “All of the statistics point to having gender balance … actual make your organization more financially, culturally, innovatively, creatively more successful,” Pamela Antil, Assistant City Manager Santa Barbara, CA. “So it’s the right thing to do, but it’s also the right business thing to do.”
As Wedell says, “I see more and more independent filmmakers using their talents to benefit organizations, companies and communities. Video is one of the most important forms of public engagement, outreach and marketing – making short form videographers extremely valuable.” We couldn’t agree more. In fact, we’ve devoted an entire panel at Audience Awards Film Festival to Social Change through Filmmaking. We are definitely on Wedell’s side and we see her activating that same initiative through Steps Toward Gender Balance. We look forward to her next work, a short video about diversity and gender equality in law enforcement.
