Why More Researchers Are Turning to Film to Amplify Their Broader Impact

In today’s rapidly shifting world, research can’t just live in academic journals—it needs to live in hearts, classrooms, communities, and public dialogue. That’s where storytelling comes in.

At AudPop, we believe powerful research deserves powerful storytelling. That’s why we’re helping researchers, institutions, and funders translate their work into compelling films that engage the public, fulfill Broader Impact goals, and spark lasting change.

Science Is Complex. Film Makes It Human.

The challenge isn’t the science—it’s making that science resonate.

Film invites emotion, narrative, and imagination into the conversation. It turns data into meaning. It invites students, families, and policymakers into the story. And it turns research into something that can be felt.

The Case in Point: Harvard Medical School x AudPop

We’re currently partnering with Harvard Medical School’s Personal Genetics Education Project (PGED) on an ambitious initiative: the CRISPR Imagined Futures Storyboard Challenge.

The question at the heart of the challenge:
What might life look like if CRISPR helps us live happily and healthily past 100 years old?

From that prompt, we’re commissioning four visionary short films—each imagining a future transformed by gene editing. Filmmakers will explore the impact of longevity across health, education, infrastructure, and retirement, blending scientific accuracy with bold creative vision.

These micro films (1–4 minutes each) will be used across schools, conferences, social media, and public events—turning academic insight into public imagination.

Why Researchers Are Choosing Film

Whether you're applying for an NSF grant, leading a cross-disciplinary center, or preparing for your next public campaign, film offers unmatched value:

  • Broader Impact Delivery: Easily meets grant criteria for public engagement

  • Educational Tools: Used in classrooms, outreach programs, and community events

  • Public Understanding: Makes your work relatable, visual, and memorable

  • Visibility: Great for conference activations, media coverage, and online reach

“Our work with AudPop made our science real for people outside the lab. The films helped us spark public dialogue, not just academic debate.”
