Introducing Filmmaker Felicia Hill competing in the REELPITCH Challenge

August 10, 2016

How did you get inspired to become a filmmaker?

The desire to show a different perspective in stories came when I wrote my first spec script, knowing that I was writing about culture issues that are seldom seen on the screen.

What is your favorite part about the short film form?

Getting to share my story.

Who were the people that supported the making of this film?

The film in pre-production but I can name a few! My 10 year old grandson, Stefan Wallace, who asked daily, “Nana, did you write today?” My 16 year old niece, Shania Campbell, who was always willing to hear me go on and on and share her thoughts, and the big universe that knew it would send forth the dedication.

What resources do you use as a filmmaker? Music, locations, props, editing, crew, etc.

All the above is part of Pre-production phase.

What is your next project?

To do another short film of my spec script, “The Black Mashugana.”

The independent film business is a difficult one. What keeps you motivated? Where do you see the industry going in the future?

My motivation is within and having supportive individuals who are willing to loan their ear, here and there. It means a lot. The industry will open to the idea of more short films in the theater.

Which filmmakers, artists or individuals have most influenced your work?

Rhoda Baraka (Pastor Brown) Ava Duvernay mostly. Too many to mention.

What advice would you give new filmmakers?

Know this is what you truly desire, then invest in a small digital camera and create from your own eye’s perspective but most of all, learn the basics of spec script writing where the story unfolds first. This is the meat and bones of a great script and movie.

Hey! It’s never too late to start out the gate doing what you love to do.
