Meet Ray Porrello, competing in the Real Montana showcase

April 13, 2015

How did you get inspired to become a filmmaker?

Film is one of the strongest ways to portray a message and set yourself apart in marketing. As part of my career, I know it’s important to utilize the best methods available to share the heart of what our organization is about, and film was my first priority.

What is your favorite part about the short film form?

It’s universal applicability. Most people can take the time to watch a short film.

Who were the people that supported the making of this film?

Our superiors, who gave time and money to work on this. Also, my colleagues Jonathan Allison and Jordan Steingraber who worked so hard to develop this promotional film.

What resources do you use as a filmmaker? Music, locations, props, editing, crew, etc.

We had a small crew- one person who filmed and edited, one who produced the music, and one who directed. I was really impressed with what we produced, compared to the larger, more “professional” crews.

What is your next project?

We’ll continue to work on projects for the Downtown Billings Alliance in their efforts to show the best parts of the city.

The independent film business is a difficult one. What keeps you motivated?

We’re not exclusively working in the independent film industry, so it’s easier to be excited about continuing when our family’s income isn’t fully dependent on it.

Which filmmakers, artists or individuals have most influenced your work?

The ASCAP organization with some of their documentaries and films.

What advice would you give new filmmakers?

Have fun, start small, and find some organizations who could benefit from your filmmaking experience in their marketing for some quick wins.
