September 17, 2018

LGBTQ pride month came to a close at the end of June, but this list of staff-picked shorts will keep those fabulous feelings going now that summer is over. These films explore themes of secrecy, self-love, culture, identity, perseverance and how they affect some members of the LGBTQ community.

Barrio Boy by Dennis Shinners

Barrio Boy follows Quique, a barber in Brooklyn, who is keeping his homosexuality a secret from the others at the shop, his cousin and childhood friend. When another young man walks in for a haircut, Quique silently dreams of everything he wishes he could share with a partner… before his client walks out the door.

Teagan by Igor Coric

A story of transition – from male to female, and from despondency to happiness. Using recorded interview material and representative artwork, this short touches on the fear and loneliness of living in the closet, and the joy and confidence that comes with stepping into the light.

Muxes by Ivan Olita

The latest film by Ivan Olita is a piece documenting the far reaches of the southern state of Oaxaca where, in the indigenous communities around the town of Juchitán, the world is not divided simply into males and females. The local Zapotec people have made room for a third category, which they call “muxes” – men who consider themselves women and live in a socially sanctioned limbo between the two genders.

The LGBTQAlphabet by Jordan Bahat

Terminology can provide a sense of belonging for much of the LBGTQ community. This non-narrative piece goes through the alphabet, identifying different words and language that pertains to queer identity.

Pink Moon by Sal Bardo

In a society where heterosexuals are persecuted and abortion is forbidden, two teens are forced to hide an unintended pregnancy before their secret romance is exposed.
