Lights… Camera… Lenses…
Professional directors of photography Anka Malatynska and Liz Hinlein explain how lenses are the alphabet of film.
Choosing equipment when beginning to shoot a film can be a daunting task. Arguably the most difficult is which lenses to use with your camera; not only what kind of lenses but how many as well. That’s what the cinematographer is there for.
Like the writer has his pen and the production designer has his sketches, the cinematographer is the person who essentially “writes” the film with a camera. He/she is an expert in all things cameras and lenses. The lenses they use are like the alphabet and grammar style for shooting a film.
