In First Place, “We Are In The Field” by Gabriel Diamond:

“We Are In The Field” Gabriel Diamond, Earth Day Film Challenge

“A young Nepalese man struggles to protect the wildlife and natural habitat of his country. This documentary follows Manoj Gautam on a passionate quest to protect animals and wildlife from cruelty and extinction. As a child, he was inspired by the work of Jane Goodall, and has since become her close friend and protégé. He founded Nepal’s first wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center and Roots & Shoots branch. With minimal resources and no formal training he’s created a network of allies across the country, tracking and busting smugglers, protecting fragile ecosystems, and rescuing abused animals. For 11 days filmmaker Gabriel Diamond followed Manoj as he traversed the country, monitoring the training and abuse of baby elephants for PETA in Chitwan National Forest, going undercover to track owl, eagle, and leopard smugglers, evading their death threats, rescuing cobras from snake charmers, confronting abusive zookeepers, creating a vulture eco-tourism reserve, planning a massive alien plant species eradication effort, freeing pythons, teaching Tibetan refugees, and continually finding new ways to improve conditions for plants and animals. weareinthefield.com

“This short documentary is about a university student from Perth, Western Australia, who travels to Singapore to learn how to live a Zero Waste lifestyle.”

In Third Place, “Eco Peace Middle East” by Gabriel Diamond:

“Eco Peace Middle East” by Gabriel Diamond

“In an area famed for hopeless divisions, Eco Peace Middle East is finding a way to bridge the divides between Israelis and Palestinians in a most unique way, and protecting the environment along the way… EcoPeace co-founder Gidon Bromberg describes the vision and accomplishments of this most unusual organization. EcoPeace Middle East (formerly Friends of the Earth Middle East) is a unique organization that brings together Jordanian, Palestinian, and Israeli environmentalists. Their primary objective is to promote cooperative efforts to protect the shared environmental heritage of the region. In so doing, they seek to advance both sustainable regional development and the creation of necessary conditions for lasting peace in the region. EcoPeace has offices in Amman, Bethlehem, and Tel-Aviv. The organization is a member of Friends of the Earth International, the largest grassroots environmental organization in the world. EcoPeace approaches cross-border environment and peacebuilding issues by first developing a regional strategy. They hire local researchers – Palestinian, Jordanian, and Israeli – to gain a regional understanding of the root causes of problems, and then they develop a common vision of how to influence decision-makers, the media, and the general public. A key to EcoPeace’s success is that once the common vision has been developed, staff from each office take the same vision and present it to their respective national audiences: Palestinian, Jordanian, and Israeli.”
