Vienna Film Commission

What is your film commission’s mission?

The Vienna Film Commission is the first point of contact for filming in Vienna. As a free of charge service by the City of Vienna it supports national and international film and TV productions that aim to shoot movies, documentaries, advertisements or student films in Vienna.

The Vienna Film Commission acts as an interface between the Vienna City Administration and the film industry, particularly for the granting of film permits. It supports production companies in looking for suitable locations and service partners within the industry in Vienna. Furthermore the Vienna Film Commission lobbies for the film industry and promotes Vienna worldwide as a film location to achieve sustainable effects for the local film industry.

What makes your film commission unique?

In the last years Vienna gained a lot of experience with international productions: Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation with Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, produced by Paramount Pictures, Woman in Gold starring Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds and Daniel Brühl, directed by Simon Curtis produced by Origin Pictures and The Weinstein Company. 2015 Mumbai based Dharma Productions shot Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starring Anushka Sharma, Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, directed by Karan Johar.

The producers David Thompson and Peter Heslop were very pleased with our support:

“The Vienna Film Commission were enormously helpful providing location and physical support on our initial recces and the location manager provided by the Service Company (2nd District) did a very good job securing the locations we had found. This is some of the best support we have received from a film commissioner abroad and was a big factor in helping us reach our decision to film in Vienna.” (Beyond Cinema Issue 8, Winter 2015, Page 52)

Christopher McQuarrie: “We had an extraordinary experience in Vienna making Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation. The city, the film commission and, of course, the wonderful people of Vienna welcomed us with open arms and helped us achieve the impossible.” –http://www.viennafilmcommission.at/Vienna-Film-Commission

Woman in Gold premiered during the Berlinale 2015, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation had its global premiere at the Vienna State Opera.

What are some perks to filming in your location?

Vienna is perfect for filming on location and it’s easy to move around. The city has excellent transport links, it is the natural hub of Central Europe, especially to the East. Crews are very experienced and English is spoken as a matter of course.
