August is Art Appreciation month and in commemoration of the arts, we have made a list of five great avant-garde film festivals around the world.
AVIFF Cannes Art Film Festival: Marseille, France
Held every May in the south of France, “The AVIFF-Art Film Festival Cannes has become one of the preferred places of promoting contemporary art in the field of video art film associated with a changing art market.” AVIFF hosts feature and short art films from all around the world.
Carmel International Film Festival: Carmel, California
The Carmel International Film Festival highlights film, art, photography and music. Held October 15-19 this festival includes venues on the white sands beach of Carmel-by-the-Sea. For five days it hosts “groundbreaking art, exclusive premiers and one-of-a-kind encounters with today’s leading artists, filmmakers and industry professionals.”
World Arts Film Festival: Jacksonville, Florida
The World Arts Film Festival is hosted by the non-profit organization World Arts Education. The festival invites established and first-time filmmakers along with a diverse mix of filmmaker of different ages, backgrounds and those with special needs. “The organization is dedicated to a global message of inclusion through the arts and education.”
New Art Film Festival: Champaign, Illinois
The New Art Film Festival showcases the art cinema of local Illinois independent filmmakers. The festival takes place at The Art Theater Co-op in downtown Champaign, two hours south of Chicago. The festival “treats its audiences to mix of shorts, features and live presentations, all drawn from a homegrown film culture.”
Art Film Festival: Trencin, Slovakia
Slovakia has a long standing tradition of art-house cinema making. Located outside of Bratislava, The Art Film Festival is as old as Slovakia itself, having also been founded in 1993. “The festival is aimed at presenting a wide spectrum of world cinema, from feature films to documentaries, from shorts to experimental movies, including special sections presenting the new Slovak cinema and historical retrospectives.”
