Audience Awards Announces Women’s Film Challenge Winners

Audience Awards announces Best Documentary, Narrative, Audience Choice and more in the 2018 Women’s Film Challenge.

Women’s Film Challenge Best Documentary, Jury Pick: She’s Revolutionary directed by Brittany B.Monét Fennell follows Time Person of the Year for 2017, Tarana Burke, civil rights activist and creator of the #metoo movement. The film explores Tarana’s life as a survivor, activist and mother and how she found the confidence to start a movement telling other survivors they are not alone. Fennell wins a Canon C100 w/24-105 camera kit and one Chroma Color package.

Women’s Film Challenge Best Narrative, Jury Pick: The Melancholy Man directed by Samantha Aldana is an unexpected love story between the world’s saddest man and the world’s saddest woman. Aldana wins a $15,000 Panavision camera rental package and one ChromaColor color corrections package.

Women’s Film Challenge Best Film, Audience Choice: Fade- Freedom Against Dark Enemies by Charity Smith showcases the pain, stagnancy and the release of accepting your past and the realization that only you control your destiny and your freedom. Smith wins  $500 for her audience win.

Best Narrative Film Honorable Mention: Zaya directed by Susanne Serres;

Staff Pick: #WeMatter directed by Sherrie Quannea;

Best in Cinematography: Rough Waters directed by Claire Imler;

Best in Sound: Nice 14.01.16 directed by Gisele Nour;

Best in Editing: The Melancholy Man directed by Samantha Aldana;

Best Score: The Melancholy Man directed by Samantha Aldana;

The eleven finalists in this year’s Women’s Film Challenge are: The Road to Motherhood by Sofie Peeters; Rough Waters by Claire Imler; Such and Such by Ashley Seering; QAMANIQ by Florence Pelletier; She’s Revolutionary by Brittany B.Monét Fennell; Fade- Freedom Against Dark Enemies by Charity Smith; ZAYA by Susanne Serres; Nice 14.07.16 by Gisele Nour; #WeMatter by Sherrie Quannea; Behind Closed Doors by Bianca Armbruster; The Melancholy Man by Samantha Aldana.

The winners were decided on by the Women’s Film Challenge  jury panel championed by Tina Perry, EVP,  OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network; Irene Taylor Brodsky, Oscar-nominated, Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker, most recently nominated for Best Director and Best Documentary with her film Beware the Slenderman at the 2017 Critics Choice Awards; Nichelle S. Carr, Founder of West City Once Studios, a studio dedicated to the entertainment and enlightenment of all audiences; Chloe Gbai, of POV, a filmmaker/producer whose work centers around issues of race, immigration, and gender and can be seen on Teen Vogue, HBO, VH1, Logo TV and Vimeo staff pick; Angela Northington, industry veteran in content strategy, acquisitions and programming, serving most recently as SVP, Content Acquisitions & Programming for Urban Movie Channel; Cali Bondad, Oakland-based director and 2017 Women’s Film Challenge Documentary winner for her film, Our Voices Are Rarely HeardSarah Clift, writer/director and the 2017 Women’s Film Challenge Grand Jury winner for her film, La Madre Buena.
