Who are you and what’s your filmmaking background?
My name is Chris von Hoffmann and I’m a film obsessed LA filmmaker. I’ve made a bunch of short films including Fuel Junkie, White Trash and Vodka 7. White Trash had its World Premiere at the Chinese Theatre for the 17th Annual Dances With Films Festival and won Best Guerilla Short for the 10th Annual Action on Film Festival. Vodka 7 won Best Cinematography at the WILD Sound Film Festival in Toronto and screened at Tribeca Cinemas for the 9th Annual Big Apple Film Festival. My biggest influences are Scorsese, Abel Ferrara, Billy Friedkin and Jean-Pierre Melville.
What are you working on right now?
I recently premiered my latest 20 minute short film, Fuel Junkie at Sony Picture Studios and it’s now on the festival circuit. My writing partner and I have written a dystopian action/thriller feature film in the vein of The Proposition and Mad Max, that we’re shooting in July and August of this year.
What are you promoting?
My short film White Trash which is an 11 minute crime/drama heavily inspired by the crime films of the 70s.
What do you want the audience to take away from your films?
I’m not really into heavy handed, message driven films. I just want to make visual rock ‘n’ roll albums and hopefully when the audience finishes one of my films, feels invigorated and remember why they love film in the first place.
What’s your favorite story from filmmaking?
Back in May 2014, I directed my latest short film, Fuel Junkie for 4 days in Lancaster, California with a 20 person crew. It was the most professional filmmaking experience I’ve ever had. So many things went wrong all day, every day, but myself, the cast and the entire crew all trucked through it and none of that would have been possible if it wasn’t for the incredible passion everyone on the set had. It was quite surreal to be honest and an experience I’ll never forget.
What are your wildest dreams for your filmmaking career?
That at least one of my films plays at the Arclight Cinema Dome in Hollywood and/or part of the Midnight Madness program at the Toronto Film Festival. Either of those would be heaven on earth for me.
What is something bizarre about you?
There are many things that are bizarre about me, but maybe the most bizarre thing is that I take cold showers 6-7 days a week.
What currently inspires you?
Australian and French horror films.
What’s your best advice for an aspiring filmmaker?
Never be too self-satisfied with your endeavors because once you hit that point, there’s no where else to go but down.
