What’s your Fusion Doc Challenge film about?
Let Them Eat Cake is a short documentary about a cake shop owner who receives an unusual order and is forced to decide if she should abide by the First Amendment, or stick to her own beliefs.

How did you choose your subject?
My producer Leonardo Marinas and I were at a filmmaker’s gathering and his girlfriend Kelsy told us about the controversial same-sex wedding case in Oregon. All the attendees started taking sides and debating whether it was right or wrong. When seeing how passionate and extreme their reactions were, I knew this was a subject I needed to explore.
What was the hardest thing about the challenge?
The fact that I messed up the dates and we found out about it two days later. I basically thought I had registered for the last date, when we were actually registered for the second one. So when I learned about our genre and theme, our countdown had already counted two days. In total, we had less than three days to find the subject, convince them of participating, filming, editing, and uploading the film. It was extremely stressful, but highly entertaining.
What was the best thing about the challenge?
Meeting our protagonist Karen Matamoros. She has the biggest heart and committed to this project like if it was her own. Plus, her cupcakes are delicious.
What’s your biggest take away from the challenge?
There is always a middle ground. As our protagonist says in the end, we should be embracing our differences, even when dealing with something as simple as a piece of cake.

What is on the docket now for your film career/What are you working on?
I’m currently directing a verité feature documentary about Garrett Holeve, the world’s first mixed martial arts fighter with Down syndrome and his legal battle to be allowed to compete.
Anything else you want your audience to know?
I had to travel to five different stores in order to find two same-sex wedding cake toppers.
