Presenting the Southeast Arizona Independent Film Festival

June 24, 2015

What is your film festival’s mission?

The Southeast Arizona Independent Film Festival provides a venue for aspiring filmmakers to present
their work to an audience of contemporaries, professional filmmakers and the general public to receive firsthand reactions and to benefit from feedback.

What role does your film festival play in supporting your film’s community?

The Southeast Arizona Independent Film Festival puts together a group of talented film personnel to pre-screen and judge the entries to the Festival. The judges are charged with giving their rationale for selecting the films to be shown. During the Festival, invited film professionals speak about their part in the film industry, participate in round tables, critiques, and discussions with the individual entrants. We present the selected films free to the general public.

What is something people look forward to every year at your film festival?

At our opening reception, the attendees have the opportunity to mingle and speak with film professionals and other entrants in a relaxed atmosphere. The Audience Favorite Award is always welcomed enthusiastically, as are all the other awards. Our custom made trophies are a big hit with their recipients.

What do you want audiences to take away from your film festival?

We want the audience to enjoy the films as entertainment, but on a more sophisticated level, we want the audience to see the amazing talent that abounds in this region and to get a better understanding of the filmmaking process. We also want to inspire those who think they may want to become filmmakers and to give them the opportunity to see firsthand what others are doing with limited equipment, facilities and budgets.

How long has your film festival been around?

Our first Southeast Arizona Independent Film Festival occurred in March, 2014. 2016 will be our third year.

How did your film festival come into being?

With the revival and reopening of the Willcox Historic Theater, some of those involved looked for alternative ways to showcase the theater, to provide more in the way of culture, education and entertainment to the community and to provide a way to showcase area talent.

What do you want audiences to take away from your film festival?

We want audiences to realize that film, as a method of communication, comes not only from big budget Hollywood productions, but also from our own communities. There are many talented people telling stories that should be heard. It is our hope that many of these filmmakers will succeed both in Hollywood and as independents.

Anything else you’d like to tell the audience about your festival?

The Southeast Arizona Independent Film Festival dates are April 15-16, 2016.
We are located in a very small town with the closest theater to Willcox being 50 miles away. The Willcox Historic Theater, as a non-profit, is committed to bringing culture, education and entertainment to our community and its surrounding area. We hope that a wider audience will come for the weekend for the Festival and, while you’re here, visit our incredible scenic resources and do some wine tasting at one of our many superb, award-winning wineries. AND, we have the best tasting popcorn!!!
