Audience Awards Staff Pick: MUXES by Ivan Olita

August 16, 2018

Audience Awards has selected this week’s staff pick film, Muxes directed by Ivan Olita. Muxes was an Official Selection in Audience Awards 2018 LGBTQ Shorts Film Festival.

Audience Awards staff pick, Muxes is the latest film by Ivan Olita and documents the far reaches of the southern state of Oaxaca where, in the indigenous communities around the town of Juchitán, the world is not divided simply into males and females. The local Zapotec people have made room for a third category, which they call “muxes” – men who consider themselves women and live in a socially sanctioned limbo between the two genders.

Director, Ivan Olita is a filmmaker, creative director and the founder of the production company, Bravo. His most recent projects range from short films, events and interactive components and can be found on Nowness, Showstudio, V, Harper’s Bazaar and W Magazine. Olita has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood such as Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Karl Lagerfeld.

Muxes has been featured on National Geographic, Short of the Week, Nowness, Vimeo Staff Pick and has screened at a spread of LGBTQ film festivals across the world.
