Last week we ran an article about Disney’s casting struggles with their live-action “Aladdin” remake. Over the weekend, Disney’s struggle came to an end. According to an article by Variety, Mena Massoud will assume the role of Aladdin and Naomi Scott will take on the role of Jasmine. They both join Will Smith who has been cast as the Genie.
The studio had reportedly found difficulty casting actors of Middle-Eastern or Indian descent who could sing and dance. It would seem they hurdled the obstacle. Massoud is an Egyptian-Canadian and Scott’s mother is of Gujarati Indian descent. Scott is just coming off her role as the Pink Ranger in the live action “Power Rangers” movie. Massoud is a newcomer to the movie industry.
