Presenting Filmmaker Sondre Fristad, competing in Up & Left: An LGBTQ Short Film Competition

June 8, 2015

How did you get inspired to become a filmmaker?

In my head I have been a filmmaker since I was a little kid. I used to dress up as the characters in Disney and go to kindergarten as Mickey Mouse. I was inspired by what we watched on television, movies and could not understand why we don’t film everything.

What is your favorite part about the short film form?

To tell a good story which is never told before in a short time.

Still from Sondre Fristad's "Alex."

Who were the people that supported the making of this film?

Big support from my sister who is a lesbian. I wanted to take her life and show it on the screen, but I am a boy so I could never understand how a lesbian thinks. So that’s why I choose a male character as a transvestite.

What resources do you use as a filmmaker? Music, locations, props, editing, crew, etc.

I use musicians, premiere, a very good crew an editor and a DP.

What is your next project?

My next project is a new short film about a young boy who is bullied by three guys and how bad things can go if others don’t help out.

The independent film business is a difficult one. What keeps you motivated? Where do you see the industry going in the future?

My motivation is, this is what I am actually good at. I can’t go to a boring job. I need something different everyday. I think it is exciting that independent filmmaking industry is growing. Yet there are too many people downloading movies. The good thing about the future is that it is easier to get people from another part of the world to see your film.

Which filmmakers, artists or individuals have most influenced your work?

Steven Spielberg and his amazing talent to see how a good movie should be made.

What advice would you give new filmmakers?

Learn as much as you can about the camera, editing program, producing and directing. Try it all and you will find your passion. And never stop making movies.
