What is your film festival’s mission?

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles showcases innovative works by emerging independent filmmakers from around the world. We feature short films, feature films, documentaries, animated films, and new media.

NFMLA4What role does your film festival play in supporting your film community?

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles provides the Los Angeles community of entertainment professionals and filmgoers with a constant surge of monthly screening events. NFMLA provides a forum where filmmakers can be recognized for their contributions, have open audience discussions about their projects and connect with industry professionals for insight on distribution, production, acquisition and representation. With the goal of showcasing, supporting and connecting emerging filmmakers, NFMLA rapidly expanded to become much more than a monthly film festival, and now hosts and co-hosts a number of major Los Angeles film events, annually, together with our NFMLA partners. Our In Focus series also brings diverse and underrepresented voices in filmmaking into the spotlight.

What is something people look forward to every year at your film festival?

People look forward every MONTH to the incredible quality of the films they’ll experience. NFMLA is known for the excellence of its content. NFMLA filmgoers also look forward to many opportunities to network, connect and share ideas with one another at our festivals – and often ultimately collaborate. Finally, NFMLA filmgoers look forward to having a great time as every program features DJ, bar, and more.

NFMLA3How long has your film festival been around?

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles has been around for over eight years. We have offices in Hollywood at Sunset Gower Studios, and in Downtown L.A. at 1150 Olive Center.

How did your film festival come into being?

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles was founded by Larry Laboe, Executive Director and Susie Kim, Artistic Director. Larry and Susie saw that Los Angeles craved a monthly film festival designed to support LA’s filmmaking community and people hungry for great independent cinema by emerging filmmakers. The NFMLA model was at first based on the NewFilmmakers New York model, and has since expanded — but maintains close ties to NFNY.

What do you want audiences to take away from your film festival?

Audiences feel that they’ve been introduced to incredible, unique, and diverse stories and fantastic up-and-coming filmmakers. Each screening includes an audience Q&A with the films’ directors, and audiences feel like they’ve learned a lot from the filmmakers in a setting where there are real opportunities to interact with one another. They leave excited to come back the next month for more.
