Meet the People Behind The Audience Awards: Gaaby Patterson

June 23, 2014

Introducing Gaaby Patterson, blogger and writer for AudNews.

1. Who are you?
That’s such a big question for  8:00  in the morning.  In no particular order: my name is Gaaby Patterson.  I’m a writer and editor.  I’m the wife of a rock ‘n’ roll drummer and the mother of two amazing kids, Zach, 12 and Hannah, 9.  My latest adventure is as a student at the University of Montana.  I have the privilege of blogging for the AudNews.  My recently christened blog,  Gaaby gets Reel, is a strange combination of movie reviews and revelations about the underbelly of my life.

2.  What’s the best part about working for The Audience Awards?
The most exciting thing about what I get to do for the Audience Awards is the creative freedom it awards me.  I get to combine writing about movies, music and entertainment with writing something authentic that allows me to connect with people.  I get to focus on the creative endeavors of others.  Plus, part of my job is watching movies.  What?!

3. Tell us the why you’re excited about what The Audience Awards is building.
I am thrilled to have gotten in on this project early on, as it’s on the precipice of something great. In my experience, everything about the Audience Awards seeks to encourage and ignite creativity.  How could that be anything but a smashing success?

4. What’s something bizarre about yourself.
I asked my husband  “What’s something bizarre about me?” and he said, “Where do I begin?” Then I asked my 12-year-old son, and he said, “You? Everything.”  But I’m pretty sure they’re the weird ones.

5. Do you have a favorite film on the site?
I really like the film I got to review, The Other Side, partly because I love seeing the beauty of Montana through any lens, and partly because I’m such a wussy that I can only experience crazy things like slopeskiing vicariously.

6.What’s an entertainment trend you love right now?
Things/people in the entertainment world I’m obsessed with right now: Mindy Kaling, Marc Maron’s podcast WTF, Jack White’s new album, “Lazaretto,” almost anything the Paley Center for Media puts out, specifically panels of writers, producers and actors on all my favorite TV shows.

7. Name a few people who inspire you.
I’m in college right now, so I feel like I’m surrounded by inspiring people and my life is one inspiring experience after another (Is this normal?).  I’m in the middle of writing an essay collection that was inspired solely by my Issues in Biology class.  I kept a list of all the things I learned in biology that made me feel weird inside (i.e. the largest mountain range on the planet is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.  Trees are mostly air.  Genetically speaking, you are one of 64 trillion possibilities).  I’d be remiss if I didn’t say I find my husband and children insanely inspirational: they give me great material.
