Still from Untrammeled.

One of our favorite stories from filmmaking, was during the production of a documentary film we did last year called Untrammeled. Filmed entirely on location in the Bob Marshall Wilderness for the US Forest Service’s celebration of 50 years of the Wilderness Act. Due to the restrictions of filming in wilderness we had to use solar chargers and lightweight equipment to get us through an 80 mile trip that encompassed over two weeks of shooting. It was an incredible experience.

What are your wildest dreams for your filmmaking career?

Our wildest dream, is to create more documentaries about Montana’s natural landscape and environment with some epic helicopter shots!

What is something bizarre about you?

Shanenon [Starrett Artists video and still photographer] didn’t know the full spelling of his name until he was in middle school. His mother added the “non” onto his birth certificate because she thought “Shane” wasn’t creative enough and didn’t tell anyone.

Who currently inspires you?

Currently–director, Wes Anderson and always Stanley Kubrick.

What’s your best advice for an aspiring filmmaker?

Start out as a still photographer.

Starrett Artists is opening their new studio this spring, at 211 Main Street in Stevensville, Montana.
